Realities by the Numbers

  • When you give blood, you are potentially saving the life of a friend, a relative, or an acquaintance in the Hispanic community.

  • Less than 5% of the Hispanic and Latino population donates blood.
  • The Hispanic and Latino population is increasing at a rate three times the national average of all other ethnicities.

  • Nearly 60% of the Hispanic and Latino population has type O blood, which is the blood type that is highest in demand.

  • Blood type matching often requires donors from a similar ethnic background, which makes it difficult to match patients of Hispanic or Latino descent due to an under-represented donor base.

Dispelling the Myths

Are you hesitant to give blood? Knowing the real facts about blood donation helps to dispel many common concerns, and we want to share them with you:

Donating blood is very safe and blood donors who give regularly may experience long-term health benefits.

There is zero risk of being infected with HIV.

Donating your blood does not cause you to gain weight. It’s important to hydrate before and after donating, but a pint of blood weighs 1 pound. So by donating, you actually lose 1 pound.

Giving blood actually can improve your health by reducing excess iron stored in your body and encouraging your body to produce new blood cells.

Although you should wait a few hours to engage in vigorous exercise, donating blood does not affect the sex drive.

There is no upper age limit to donating. As long as you are healthy and meet all regular donation criteria you may donate.

Taking medications does not necessarily mean you are not eligible to donate. But here is a list of medications to review before coming to to donate:

If you are healthy and your diabetes is under control you may be able to become a blood donor. You should check with your doctor before you make an appointment to donate blood.

You do not need a social security card to donate but you do need a photo ID.
