Make a New Year’s Resolution to Save Lives

If someone had suggested this to me before I started working at a blood center, I would have given them an odd look. How am I supposed to plan for that? I’m not a paramedic or a firefighter. Opportunities to save small children from burning buildings don’t show up regularly in my life (and I don’t want them too). Besides, I haven’t been doing too good on that resolution to go to the gym. Saving lives is a lot to expect.

But what if I told you that I will save a life, possibly even more than one, in 2018 and that it will be easier than going to the gym. And that it may even involve eating a cookie. Because I can save lives just by donating blood. I’m O positive, a popular blood type that can be used by anyone who has Rh positive blood. But it doesn’t matter if you know your blood type. All blood types are needed and you’ll get a health checkup when you donate that will let you know your blood type. Ready to save a life in 2018?

All you have to do is go to your local donor center or find a blood drive near you. Once there, you’ll fill out a form, answer some questions and have your iron checked. If everything is okay, you’ll take a seat for the donation process, which usually only lasts 10 to 15 minutes. Then you’ll be offered a snack, like juice or a cookie and that’s it. You’re done and your donation will be processed and delivered to a hospital to help save lives.
