Are you a blood donor?

Are you a blood donor?

If so – thank you! You’ve probably never met the people saved by your blood donation. Most of us never will. Though if you ask around, it probably won’t take you long to find someone who has been helped by a blood donation. They might have been in an accident or had surgery. Or they could be battling a disease where blood products, like red blood cells or platelets, are needed to help with the fight. Statistics tell us that every 2 seconds someone in the US needs blood. Think about it. To meet that need, we need the equivalent of someone donating blood every 2 seconds. Fortunately, blood can be donated in advance, so no one has to get up at 3am to go donate. Though I can guarantee that someone is in the hospital at 3am using that donation you made earlier.

Donate in advance. It’s an important concept. We tend to think about blood donation when we hear about a tragedy on the news, not on a calm winter day when we’re sitting at the office. But somewhere, someone isn’t having a calm day and the blood they need has to already be waiting for them at the hospital. Which means we have to donate before the need so the blood can be tested and shipped to our local hospitals.

At OneBlood, we’ve created a documentary to help people understand that need because we have lived through it. On June 12, 2016, there was a shooting at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, just blocks away from one of our donor centers. A OneBlood team member lost his life that night. By morning, donors were lined up around the block to help supply much needed blood and replenish the blood supply. But the unsung heroes that day were the blood donors who had donated days before the tragedy. People who had no idea that one June day, their blood would be rushed from OneBlood facilities all over the state of Florida to help save young people in Orlando. We’re telling their story in hopes that it will encourage more people to donate blood, and to donate regularly. Blood donation saves lives.
