Reflecting on The Pulse Tragedy

Last year I had the opportunity to take part in an event that brought me to tears. During June, survivors of the Pulse tragedy met the blood donors who saved their lives. It’s difficult to describe how moving it was to see these two groups meet. A 16-year-old who had donated for the first time. A veteran who’d been donating for over 50 years.  Normal people, like me, who’d taken a half hour or so out of their day to donate blood, never knowing the impact they’d have.

They didn’t know the impact because they donated before the Pulse shooting happened. The donations they made could have gone to treat someone who was scheduled for surgery. Or who’d been in a car accident. All of these are reasons blood donations are needed on a daily basis. But sometimes something out of the ordinary happens, such as the Pulse tragedy, and we want to do something to help. So we line up to donate blood. We shouldn’t stop doing that because those donations replenish the blood supply. But if we want to be like those unsuspecting donors whose blood donation saved the lives of Pulse victims as they were rushed into the hospital, we have to donate, like them, on those normal days when we don’t know who will need the blood. When we do that, our blood donations will already be in the hospital when they are needed.

But this brief blog isn’t enough to show you everything that had to happen to save the lives of those injured in the Pulse shooting. The OneBlood documentary Lifeline: The Untold Story of Saving the Pulse Survivors is now available on Amazon Prime. I invite you to watch a preview and learn more by clicking here
