As a reminder – please review the information below for patient safety and your safety. 

Follow these recommendations for your safety.

  • Drink 12 ounces of fluid and eat something before you leave the donation site
  • Do not leave until released by staff and remain on site for 15 minutes
  • Wait at least 30 minutes, preferably 2-4 hours, before smoking
  • Leave the bandage on for about 4 hours 
  • Avoid strenuous activity today, such as:
    • lifting heavy objects
    • sports and exercise
    • outdoor or heat-related activities
    • critical work that requires maximum ability
  • Drink extra non-alcoholic fluids for 24 hours and maintain increased fluid intake for several days
  • Avoid alcohol until you have eaten
IF YOU EXPERIENCE THEN
Bleeding from the donation site
  • Raise your arm
  • Apply pressure
Bruising, pain, or swelling
  • Apply ice for first 24 hours
  • Apply heat the next 
1-2 days
Fainting or dizziness
  • Lie down
  • Raise your legs OR
  • Sit with your head between your knees
Symptoms that do not resolve with home care
  • Call OneBlood at 1.888.9.DONATE (1.888.936.6283)
  • Option 6 for care

Follow these recommendations for patient’s safety.

We know you care about patients who receive transfusions. To protect their safety, call OneBlood at 1.888.9.DONATE (1.888.936.6283) Option 7 if you:

  • Experience any signs/symptoms of an illness or infection within 48 hours of donation: fever, chills, cough, headache, sore throat, prolonged nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, swollen glands, body aches or rash
  • Remember something about your medical or personal history that may affect your recent donation
  • Feel that your blood should not be given to patients

Don’t forget to make your next appointment.
