The Blood Bank Technologist (BBT) program is six (6) months long, part-time Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 0800-1200 for didactic training. Wednesdays are reserved for eight (8) hours of hands-on, wet laboratory training. 

Topics covered during the program include immunology; genetics; blood donor collection and infectious disease testing; component manufacturing, storage, distribution, and quality control testing; blood groups; pretransfusion testing; blood utilization; blood administration; and adverse events of transfusion.

The required prerequisites for the BBT Program include:
  1.Baccalaureate degree in biological sciences, with 24 hours in the following:
                a. 6 hrs biology
                b. 6 hrs chemistry, and
                c. 12 hrs biology and/or chemistry
2.Official transcripts from each college or university attended. GPA 3.0 or higher preferred.
3.Three references using our form OneBlood BBT application Reference Form

Deadline for Application Materials:
•Unofficial transcripts MUST be reviewed in advance by the Program Director to ensure prerequisites and minimum GPA requirements are met. Email to 
•Completed application [OneBlood BBT Application for Admission], resume, three references, and official transcript must be submitted by the middle of May. Refer to the OneBlood website or email for specifics.
•Qualified candidates are scheduled interviews with the BBT Admissions Committee after the designated application deadline.
•Candidates are will receive notifications of their acceptance or denial by mid-late June.

BBT Fees:

The application fee to the BBT Program is $50 and nonrefundable. In any given class cycle, there may be students who are employed by OneBlood, and students who are not currently employed.

NOTE: Clinical practicum experiences are mandatory for both the BBT and SBB programs. Students are solely responsible for all travel expenses associated with completing these requirements.
