While OneBlood's primary mission is to help connect community donors with hospital patients, we offer special blood donation methods. 

Autologous Donation

An autologous blood donation is when a person donates blood for their own use, prior to a scheduled surgery. Many doctors will ask you to donate a unit or two for yourself if you are undergoing a medical procedure. This will ensure that you receive your own blood, guaranteeing the best compatibility, as well as lessen the impact on the blood supply itself.

This process does require a prescription and is not available at all our blood donation centers.

The process cannot be performed within 72 hours of your scheduled surgery.

We can ship to most hospitals; however, you may be responsible for shipping and processing fees if the hospital is outside our network.

To make an appointment please call your nearest donation center.

Directed Donation

Directed donations must be made at least 72 hours before the patient will need a transfusion and no more than 30 days in advance. (Please be advised blood shipped to hospitals outside of the OneBlood service area may require additional time.)

You will need to provide the patient’s name, date of birth, social security number, physician name, hospital name, and the expected date the blood will be used.

Donors wishing to initiate a directed donation are encouraged to complete the directed donor form to expedite the process. You will need to bring the completed form with you on the day you donate.

The donor’s blood must be compatible with the intended recipient’s blood and be eligible to donate blood. In the event, the donor’s blood is not compatible with the intended recipient or if the intended recipient no longer requires blood transfusions, your blood may be used to help other patients in need of a transfusion.

Therapeutic Phlebotomy and Therapeutic Apheresis

Therapeutic Phlebotomy clients must make an appointment by calling their local donor center and must have a prescription from their doctor. You can download the prescription form.

Some patients don’t need additional blood but need certain harmful substances or components removed from their blood to treat many hematologic, neurologic, renal, rheumatic, and metabolic disorders. Also to remove pathogenic or toxic macromolecules, such as an antibody, an abnormal plasma protein, or other substance.

Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) can also be performed to replace a substance that is normally present in plasma and whose absence is harmful to the patient.

  • Most Common Indications Include:
    • Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP)
    • Guillain-Barré Syndrome
    • Myasthenia Gravis
    • Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIPD)
    • Sickle Cell Disease
    • Acute Leukemia
    • Many other diseases

  • Emergency Treatment Conditions:
    • Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP)
    • Acute chest syndrome in sickle cell disease
    • Thrombocytosis
    • Hyperleukocytosis
    • Hyperviscosity

These are life-threatening conditions in which emergency therapeutic apheresis (on the ready 24 hours a day) is the primary mode of acute treatment.
