You might be asking yourself, can I donate? We are here to debunk some of the myths when it comes to blood donation.
Yes! As long as your glucose level is within the target range and you are in overall good health, you will be eligible to donate. We recommend checking in with your diabetes healthcare provider before you make an appointment to donate to get their feedback.
Diabetics who give blood should closely monitor their glucose levels post-donation and be sure to eat a well-balanced diet and drink plenty of water.
If you have any questions regarding your diabetes and blood donations, please contact your healthcare provider.
Most medications will not defer you from donating blood as long as the medications are not prescribed to treat an infectious disease or an anticoagulant.
You can also donate whole blood while taking aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, or other NSAIDs; however, you will not be eligible to donate platelets if you have taken these medications within 48 hours of your donation.
Antibiotics will prevent you from donating for a short while; however, you will be eligible 24 hours after your last dose.
