Blood Donors Needed

Blood Donors Needed

(Orlando, Florida November 11, 2020)  Hurricane Eta has forced OneBlood, the local not for profit blood center serving Florida, North Carolina and much of the southeastern United States, to suspend operations in Tampa Bay and the Fort Myers areas.

OneBlood is urging donors living in areas that are not impacted by the hurricane to donate blood to help ensure a ready blood supply for areas impacted by the hurricane, as well as the rest of the OneBlood service area.

“The need for blood is now and it is ongoing.  The COVID-19 pandemic continues to indefinitely disrupt blood collections and the impact from the hurricane is further compounding the situation.  A sustained donor response is needed to ensure a ready blood supply is available at all times,” said Susan Forbes, Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications and Public Relations for OneBlood.

OneBlood operations are currently suspended in Pasco, Hillsborough, Pinellas, Polk, Collier, Lee, Charlotte, Desoto, Sarasota, Highlands, Hardee and Manatee counties.

Donors are urged to make blood donation a habit. “It is vital that people donate each time they are eligible. By doing so they are helping ensure a ready blood supply is available for the community, no matter the circumstances”, said Forbes.

Generally healthy people age 16 or older who weigh at least 110 pounds can donate blood. Photo ID is required. All donors receive a wellness checkup of blood pressure, pulse, temperature and iron count, including a cholesterol screening, plus a surprise gift.

One of three people will need blood in their lifetime. Blood that is donated today will likely be transfused within two to three days. The turn-around is that fast, the need is constant.
