Accelerated Blood Bank Technology Program


Opportunity for OneBlood Employees Only

The Blood Bank Technologist (BBT) program is a three (3) month long, full time, paid program focused on a course of coordinated lectures and structured practical experiences in the Immunohematology and Blood Banking Specialties. The course is designed to train on analytical procedures performed in the Laboratory Medicine sections and the relationship between the results obtained and their interpretation. Participants perform analyses on actual specimens under the constant supervision of educational department personnel or designee. Upon successful completion of the program, participants will be eligible for the examination and certification provided by the American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB) Board of Certification.

The Required Prerequisites for the BBT Program Include:

  • Baccalaureate degree in biological sciences, with 24 hours in the following:
    • 6 hrs biology
    • 6 hrs chemistry, and
    • 12 hrs biology and/or chemistry with a minimum GPA of 3.0 overall Preferred.
  • Minimum of one (1) year OneBlood work experience required with no active corrective actions on file.
  • Official transcripts from each college or university attended should be:

  • May be required to relocate to meet the requirement needs of OneBlood.

Application Information:

  1. This accelerated program runs for 3 months. Check the Pulse to see 
  2. Search MyCareers for the Medical Technologist Trainees Position.
  3. Qualified Candidates will be scheduled interviews with the BBT Admissions Committee after the designated application deadline.

If selected for the program, trainees must agree:

  1. To acquire a Florida Clinical Laboratory Technologist Trainee License in Immunohematology and Blood Banking.
  2. To become full time BBT students, students will be paid current salary and benefits.
  3. To maintain fulltime employment in good standing by OneBlood during the BBT Program, he/she will not perform any work for OneBlood in an employee capacity during the hours he/she is on student status.
  4. To Travel as needed. Reimbursement will follow OneBlood policy.
  5. If after three (3) quizzes or exams, the Student’s average is less than 75%, Student may be dismissed from the BBT Program. After three (3) instances of either tardiness (later than 15 minutes) or unexcused absences, the Student may be dismissed from the BBT Program. Decisions concerning dismissal will be made by the BBT Advisory Committee.
  6. To be placed in open positions available within OneBlood. OneBlood will determine the work location, or OneBlood affiliate facility, where Student will be employed as well as placed in a shift as available. Additionally, Student may be required to relocate to meet the recruitment needs of OneBlood.
  7. To be voluntarily employed by OneBlood for two years after the program.
  8. To reimburse OneBlood per the contract agreement should a breach of contract occur.
