PART-TIME BLOOD BANK TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM

The Blood Bank Technologist (BBT) program is six (6) months long, part-time 24 hours per week program. The schedule is: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:00am – Noon reserved for didactic training. Wednesday 8:00am to 4:00pm are reserved for wet laboratory training. This is subject to change.

Lectures are either asynchronous allowing students to complete online training from anywhere, or synchronous allowing the students and instructor to interact with each other in real time from different locations via video conference.

Concepts and techniques learned in didactic materials are reinforced through hands-on experience in the student laboratory. Upon successful completion of the program, participants are eligible for the certification examination offered by the American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB).

Basic Laboratory Knowledge | Immunology | Genetics | Blood Donor Collection | Infectious Disease Testing | Component Manufacturing | Storage | Distribution | Quality Control testing | Blood Groups | Pretransfusion Testing | Blood Utilization | Blood administration | Adverse Events of Transfusion

The required prerequisites for the BBT Program include:

  • Bachelors Degree (or higher) in Chemical, Biological Science, or Bachelors Degree with 24 semester hours of academic science, including 6 semester hours of biological sciences and 6 semester hours of chemical sciences.
  • Official transcripts from each college or university attended.
  • GPA 3.0 or higher preferred.

  • If you are a OneBlood employee, you must be exempt (salaried) to apply for this program. Please see the “Program Fees” section for more information.

Program Fees

Note: Fees are subject to change periodically. Please contact the Program Director or email MTEducation@oneblood.org for current program fees, deadlines, or other information.

Exempt OneBlood Employees:

  • The program is free of cost. Upon graduation, exempt employees will be required to work for OneBlood for 2 years.
  • There will be a prorated fee of $7,500 if their employment contract is broken.

Hospital Partners:

  • The cost of tuition for customer hospital employees, through Hospital Partner Collaboration is $7,500.
  • The Hospital partner would be required to assist with student wet laboratory training exercises and final practical examination.
  • The Hospital Partner would also need to provide a mentor to follow the curriculum issued by the OneBlood Program Director

External Applicants, (not associated with hospital partners):

  • The cost of tuition for non-OneBlood employees is $7,500, paid in two installments:
    • Upon acceptance
    • 3 months into the program
  • OneBlood will provide all lectures, labs, and practical labs
  • Upon graduation from the program, graduates are encouraged to apply for an available position at OneBlood
  • If they are hired to become a OneBlood employee, graduates will be offered a two-year contract
  • OneBlood will reimburse their tuition over the two-year time frame of the contract
