Directed Donations

A directed donation allows you to specify a patient who will receive your donated blood.
What You Need to Know:
  • Directed donations must be made at least 72 hours before the patient will need a transfusion and no more than 30 days in advance. (Please be advised, blood shipped to hospitals outside of the OneBlood service area may require additional time). Click here to view the OneBlood service area.
  • You will need to provide the patient’s name, date of birth, social security number, physician name, hospital name and the expected date the blood will be used.
  • Donors wishing to initiate a directed donation are encouraged to complete the directed donor form to expedite the process. Click here for the directed donor form.
  • You will need to bring the completed form with you on the day you donate.
  • Donors wishing to make a directed donation must be eligible to donate blood.
  • The donor’s blood must be compatible with the intended recipients’ blood. In the event the donor’s blood is not compatible with the intended recipient or if the intended recipient no longer requires blood transfusions, your blood may be used to help other patients in need of a transfusion.
  • Directed donations can be performed at any OneBlood donor center or Big Red Bus. Appointments are not required but are encouraged. To make an appointment simply call 1-888-9-DONATE.
  • If you are interested in hosting a directed donation blood drive please call 1-888-9-DONATE.
  • Due to patient confidentiality, OneBlood does not provide specific information concerning transfusions.
  • Directed donor units must meet the same criteria as units collected from volunteer donors, and there is no evidence indicating that directed donation units are safer than those collected from volunteer community donors.
