Carolyn and her family had no clue that their lives would quickly change after she turned four years old. “On and off, she would come in and complain that her tummy hurt,” said Carolyn’s father, Jeff. Her stomach ache turned out to be a rare form of bone cancer called Ewing’s Sarcoma.
“We were both just shocked. We just couldn’t believe that this could happen to us,” said Carolyn’s mother, Kathryn. It’s been a year since her diagnosis and despite her long fight against the cancer, Carolyn thinks she is a typical five-year-old. “She thinks that all the little kids get cancer at the age of four and five, and they get over it and keep going because all the kids she knows here do."
