My daughter, Emily, has a rare genetic blood disorder, atypical HUS. It ultimately caused her kidneys to fail, and she periodically needs blood transfusions to boost her hemoglobin.

Her latest episode put her in the hospital with double pneumonia and a low blood oxygen level. Her hemoglobin wasn’t able to rebound on its own and she was given two units of blood.
