Even though my story occurred many years ago, the impact on my life and the memory is as vivid as if it were yesterday. At the age of 8, I developed complications from a routine tonsillectomy. After the surgery, a nicked vein in my throat cause considerable blood loss, as much as 5 pints.
I was rushed to the hospital where doctors attempted to give me a blood transfusion to stabilize me, but because of that blood loss, my veins collapsed.
My life was literally hanging in the balance as doctors struggled to figure out how to give me the transfusions I desperately needed. As I remember, a doctor stepped in at the last moment to give me an injection that immediately gave my veins a boost, enough for them to accept blood transfusions.
To this day, I remember that doctor, who was literally an angel as far as I am concerned, saved my life. I also now realize that blood donors saved my life as well, because the blood was there when I needed it. I am now a regular blood donor who believes in miracles and realizes that those miracles happen every day because someone gives blood. I take every chance I can to convince others to give the gift of life.
