Jeffrey C.

Longwood, Florida

My blood donation began for purely selfish reasons. I worked for a state government who was supporting blood donation efforts by giving all employees who donated blood 1/2 day off work to donate.

I did not donate blood for 5 years after moving, not being proactive to find a new donation location. Then one day, a "bloodmobile" parked outside the office building.

Since that time, I have donated at the very least twice a year, and more recently every two months. I am at the 17.5 gallon level.

I would regret not donating for that 5 years, but I prefer to look at all the units I have provided for I don't know how many people who needed O- blood. I am quick to say that my specific blood has been tagged as "rare", meaning it lacks certain antibodies, thus making it safe for even babies.

An everyday hero? I don't think so, but I am glad to play my part for the cause.
