I was always a chicken when it came to opportunities to give blood, and I always had an excuse.
But all of that changed in 1993 when my son was 16 months old and needed a complicated and serious surgery that would require the need for blood. My husband and I were given information on direct donation for ourselves and any family members eligible to donate toward our son's surgery.
Needless to say, my fear quickly dissipated as I had to do this for my son's life.
I vividly remember the day we went to donate, and my son sat next to me in his stroller watching me with those big, brown eyes. Tears flowed down my face, and from that moment on I vowed to continue donating so that others may have life just as my son does. And the coolest part of all, at age 23, my son is now an active blood donor, and we now sit side-by-side and donate together whenever possible.
