When Lucy’s identical twin sister, Gisenia, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in 2015, the two became closer than ever.
Gisenia immediately began chemotherapy to treat the aggressive blood cancer. She received countless blood and platelet transfusions throughout her time at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, where Lucy was working at the time.
The twins had begun donating blood as teens, and both knew just how important those transfusions were to Gisenia’s treatment.
“We spent a lot of holidays in the hospital. I feared for her life many times. But our cancer story has a happy ending.”
-Lucy
After completing chemotherapy, doctors wanted Gisenia to undergo a stem cell transplant to significantly reduce the chances of her blood cancer returning. Her twin sister happened to be a perfect match for the transplant.
Lucy was able to donate her stem cells to Gisenia in 2016. In 2023, the pair celebrated 7 years since the transplant, and 7 years cancer free.
After their battle with cancer, Lucy and Gisenia created We Care Chemo Kits. They took care packages to cancer patients, held special events at local hospitals, and even hosted a blood drive with OneBlood.
The sisters continue to provide hope and comfort to others facing similar situations so they don’t face their battles alone. Lucy also takes any opportunity to encourage others to donate blood in the hopes of more happy endings like theirs.
