My daughter, Amanda, my son, Philip, and I had been scheduling our platelet donations together at the Missouri Avenue Donor Center for many months, maybe even years. In 2008, my son was diagnosed with a massive brain tumor. The tumor was removed, but the pre-surgery coma has left him unable to communicate with us in any way.
Donating blood has been very important to both my daughter and my son.
I am a Brazilian who has a niece who fought bravely against leukemia not once, but twice.
Since the first treatment, I realized the absurdity of the lack of blood in the world. How can humanity be so selfish and refuse to donate something that the body produces naturally and without any harm to health?
I decided to make a difference. Whenever possible, I donate blood, initially in Brazil and now here in the United States.
