I am Dr. Paul Braxton, a 67 year old retired Miami-Dade County Public Schools teacher, father of three and husband. I'm also a person who suffers with sickle cell disease. Due to this genetic illness I have had to receive blood transfusions from my earliest years as a youth and many times throughout my adult years. If it had not been for the blood donors that had provided blood during my time of need then I would not be here now to share my story.
A blood transfusion is literally a life saver to individuals suffering with sickle cell disease, I recognize this and so does my family. In fact my wife, Roberta, a School Social Worker with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, has served as the Blood Drive Chairperson at her school for the last five years. Her school has received recognition for the highest percent participation. My wife takes her role as Blood Drive Chairperson seriously and loves the idea of knowing that so many people are helping to save lives.
