I joined the army in 1961 and went to Fort Dix for basic training. During our training one day we were asked if any one of us would like to donate a pint of blood, with the offer of getting the entire afternoon off. I don’t have to tell you what goes on in basic training especially in the summer, it happened to be in July. After basic training I found out I had O-negative blood with a special antigen in my blood that is used to help new born babies.
Upon hearing this it hit me with the feeling that I have something special that somebody needs to become healthy and in some cases give them life. So every two months since then I donated my blood to the New York blood center in Manhattan
Upon moving to Florida, I kept up my donations giving to the Community Blood Bank of FL and continue with OneBlood. Since I moved to FL in the year 1996, I have donated approximately 110 pints, with a lifetime total of 250 donations. If everyone would donate a pint of blood, there would be more lives saved. So to all my brothers and sisters who donate now I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I thank God that I never needed blood, so I don’t know how it feels to need that precious commodity. So I keep giving every two months and wear my blood T-shirts every day to show that it is needed. I think everybody in OneBlood knows me. Keep it up you folks and give, give, give!
