What is a Double Red Cell Donation?

During a Double Red Blood cell donation, we only collect your red blood cells, safely returning your platelets and plasma. This specialized donation process, known as automation or apheresis, focuses on obtaining only red blood cells.

By donating Double Red Cells, you maximize the lifesaving potential of your donation. These donations are crucial for trauma patients and people with blood disorders. 

Double Red Cell Donations can Help Patients Like Hudson

When 15-year-old Hudson was thrown from a boat in 2021, everything changed in an instant.

“I swam right under and the propeller got me,” he said. “And in that moment, I knew my life changed forever.” 

After initiating Massive Transfusion Protocol, doctors estimate that Hudson needed around 50 units of blood during his first week in the hospital.

How Often Can I Donate?

You can donate Double Red Cells every 112 days, which is approximately every 16 weeks, for a total of three donations a year.

The total donation process takes about 1.5 hours, with the donation itself typically lasting around 45 minutes.

Where Can I Donate Double Red Cells?

All OneBlood Big Red Buses are equipped with an automation machine called Alyx, where Double Red Cells can be collected.
