My parents were stationed in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. My father was Rh+ and my mother was Rh-. My mother delivered my older brother (even though he weighed over 10 lbs.!) with no medical issues. However in 1950, I was born with severe jaundice. The medical staff immediately looked for someone who was B+. They found a member of the Women Army Corps who donated her blood and saved my life.
I joke that a woman tried to kill me with her antibodies and another woman saved my life! And even though I joke, donating blood is no laughing matter. A very special woman did save my life and I continue to donate mine to save many others.
