I have just reached my 18 gallon platelet donor status...and I got a certificate along with some really cool gifts and rewards. I posted on FB about how important it is to donate...and how everyone should find out if they are eligible. I could not believe the response I got after my post. It turns out that 2 of my high school friends follow me on Facebook. I graduated high school 45 years ago!
Both my friends have stories about how platelet donors have impacted their lives! One of my friends had 3 brain surgeries and received blood transfusions and platelet transfusions that helped save his life. My other friend's daughter had cancer, and platelets helped save her life. She is now cancer-free. They expressed their gratitude, and even though my particular donations did not go to them, they still know how important it is that regular people like me do superhero acts that really make a difference. I feel blessed that I have my super power, and I will continue to share my platelets for as long as I am able!
