In 2022, I was suddenly diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia after 38 years of relative issue-free health. The following year+ was a rollercoaster of ups and downs, infections and treatments, blood counts and data points. I was fortunate enough to find a bone marrow donor who was an 11/12 match for me. However, in the months after the transplant as well as preceding, I spent many hours, days, and weeks in both in and outpatient care.
Quite often during treatment because the chemo I received was meant to clear out the cancer in my blood, my counts were very low and I needed constant transfusions of blood and sometimes platelets. If it wasn't for the generosity and altruism of donors, I would have had a much more difficult time beating my leukemia. I did think about where my blood came from time to time and encouraged many of my friends and acquaintances to donate when and where they could. And when I see people soliciting donors outside the grocery store or other public places, I always thank them and share my story. I hope others do the same as I am forever grateful to all donors.
