My wife discovered a small lump in her breast which, after being diagnosed as cancerous, was removed by a lumpectomy. Sometime later we learned that the issue apparently still wasn't resolved and she had a mastectomy. By then, however, the cancer had metastasized to her liver and eventually it took her life at 48 years of age. Prior to her death she required several blood transfusions and ever since then I have tried to do my part by periodically donating blood. For a healthy person it's a small gift to give. For someone that needs blood it can be a life changer.
