I am a retired NYC school principal who moved down to SC in 2020. I decided to donate blood in a Big Red Bus where I saw a pamphlet saying there was a dire need for blood platelets and I noticed that those donations often went to cancer patients. My precious Mom had recently passed away and she had been battling cancer for many years so I saw a great reason to donate in order to help others. Platelet donations can take two hours but I entertain myself with Netflix while I am giving blood.
I have seen several complete TV series at this point as I have donated more than 20 gallons. It's really cool when I get to see that the lives of more than 500 have been impacted by my donations. Plus, they do offer some pretty cool gifts like shirts and blankets for my dog. The people who work the blood centers are incredibly kind and compassionate and they always thank me for my donation. That's just an added perk to being a platelet donor. I highly recommend donating blood platelets with OneBlood, a great organization that cares about its donors and its recipients.
