I was working at the IRS when we had the terrible events of 9/11. It was then that I and the union for which I was an officer decided to host a blood drive for IRS employees in New Jersey. We had a very good turnout and I continued to run blood drives for over 20 years until I retired. Besides people being able to help others by donating blood, one of the incentives we were able to offer, in addition to gift cards and things like that, employees got 4 hours of leave so that helped increase participation.
The running joke was that the IRS usually takes blood from people, not donate it! I no longer run the blood drives which I did for 20 years, but I donate several times a year now.
