I started donating blood in my 20s when I worked at a cancer laboratory and the bus always came around. My sister worked with me and tried to donate too but was advised by the staff that she had an exceptionally high heart rate which led to her going to a cardiologist and being placed on the right medicine to help her tackle her unknown issues. On top of that, I fell extremely ill when I was 29 and found myself in the hospital for weeks.
I remember the hospital staff asking if I approve to receive a blood transfusion if necessary, which I agreed to. In that moment it resonated with me that I hoped there would be enough blood for me and all the others in the hospital that needed it. That's a feeling I want to help to keep others from experiencing and take it very seriously to donate as often as possible to alleviate that concern. Thank you so much OneBlood!
